Desktops Versus Laptops for a College Student

This article is found in: Hardware

People that support desktops don’t want you to know that desktop computers also come with proprietary hardware. Unless you build your own desktop or buy a high end desktop (over $2500) your video card, sound card, modem, network adapter, etc. will be soldered in the tower just as many laptops are. This cuts down on costs and is common practice for all computer manufacturers.

CBS news gives two economical ways to prevent the theft of your laptop computer (CBS). The first is to purchase a cable lock available for no more the $40 (CBS). Every laptop made today comes ready to use with one of these locks. Basically, there is a hole in the case of the laptop which a cable will slide through and then the cable will wrap around furniture. This lock can be taken wherever you go. The second thing they suggest is to have the laptop engraved with your name. This is often available at your campus security or police office at no charge to you. In addition, software companies such as Brigadoon Software and Secure-It have created programs which allow you to track a stolen computer through the use of IP address information. This data can then be transferred to police authorities to recover your property (PC).
