How to change a user’s Windows XP password

If you have lost your password there are some things you can do.

Instructions
You must be able to use one of the options on the next page. After choosing an option, pick one of the methods listed.

Option 1: All version of Windows XP
If you are already logged into an administrator’s account, use one of the methods listed on the next page.

Option 2: All version of Windows XP
If there is another user account with Administrative privileges, log in as that user and use one of the methods listed on the next page.

Option 3: Windows XP Home Edition
In some cases this may work with other versions of Windows XP

When Windows XP Home is first set up it never prompts you for an administrator password. In addition, Windows allows any user classified as an administrator to change any other user’s password. Restart your computer and press the F8 key on your keyboard continuously until you receive a screen giving different choices of ‘Safe Mode’. Choose ‘Safe Mode with Networking’.  You will be shown a list of users (at least 2). Choose “Administrator” which will have no password set. Once logged in you can user any of the methods listed on the next page to change the password of your main account without knowing the original password.

Option 4: All Others
If you are unable to log in with any techniques listed above, the methods on the next page will not work for you. The key is, you must some how be able to log into Windows using an Administrator’s account.  You should contact a computer technician (http://www.johnmag4u.com) for further assistance. Under most circumstances, the password can be reset.
