If you have unread mail in a program which Windows XP recognizes as an E-Mail program, Windows will try to alert you - for example on the logon screen.  This feature can be disabled and enabled as you prefer.

Start by downloading the correct file:

Enable Unread Mail Notification

Disable Unread Mail Notification

Right click the above link and choose "Save Target As…" or "Save Link As…"

Once the file is downloaded, double click it, and choose yes when asked "Are you sure you want to add the information…"

Finally you must restart your computer.
